Jaguars’ Doug Pederson Climbing in Odds to be First Coach Fired

The bloom came off the rose for Doug Pederson and the Jaguars last season, as they regressed in myriad categories and missed the playoffs after beginning with high expectations.

The Texans are now the cream of the crop in the AFC South, and oddsmakers believe more spiraling could result in Pederson losing his job, as he is the biggest mover in the odds to become the first NFL coach fired at SportsBetting.ag.

Pederson had +2500 odds when the lines were set on July 17th, and is now listed at +1600.

The Jaguars’ previous head coach, Urban Meyer, was the first coach fired in 2021 after a 2-11 start.

While Pederson is still outside the top-10 to be the first coach fired, a slow start to the season could have him on the short list.

Pederson has been with the Jaguars for two seasons, going 9-8 each time. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence was given a huge payday this offseason, and Jacksonville still has enough pieces to turn things around and be a playoff team in 2024.

However, Calvin Ridley left via free agency and the salary cap is just going to get tighter as Lawrence’s bill comes due over the next few years.

If the Jaguars have a bumpy campaign, the oddsmakers believe it’s increasingly realistic to see Pederson become the first coach fired this season.
