Tyson Helton, Chip Kelly Betting Favorites To Become Next Head Coach At Purdue

Purdue is on the lookout for a new coach after recently moving on from Ryan Walters.

The Boilermakers went just 5-19 the past two seasons and face an uphill battle competing in the Big Ten, so this is an important hire.

Western Kentucky coach Tyson Helton has been instituted as the betting favorite to get the job after being a candidate the last time, while big names like Chip Kelly, Dan Mullen and Paul Chryst are also among the favorites.

And if you’re looking for a longshot, Drew Brees is listed at 300/1 to take over at his alma mater.

Helton is 8-4 on the season and is headed to the Conference USA Championship Game. He has won eight games or more in each of the past four seasons and has three straight bowl wins.

Kelly is the offensive coordinator at Ohio State. He rose to prominence with Oregon but his career has been up and down since then. Kelly is 61 years old now so it would be an interesting pairing for both sides.

Chryst, the former Wisconsin coach, has been a name commonly bandied about and the oddsmakers believe he is right in the mix. Same with Mullen, who previously coached at Florida.

Purdue has struggled since the departure of former head coach Brian Brohm, and this will be an important decision for the future of the program.
